Original Woodburnings

Woodburning is a natural, rustic and earthy art form. Though often used for rough stenciling, in Heather Cannistraci's hands the burner becomes a tool for art. Each burning is a hand drawn original, with graceful lines and delicate shading that reveal her training as a painter and a sculptor. Hints of color highlight many of the pieces, while others revel solely in the tones of burned wood.

Heather's woodburnings tug at the corners of the memory, where children learn to swing, collect shells, and check the sap buckets. Scenes of wonder, laughter, and innocent discovery come alive. A chickadee clings to a swaying seedpod, cows contemplate, and barns stand firm, though weathered by Vermont winters. Every burning pulses with the flavor of rural life.  Vermont's people and places find a natural home in wood that has been harvested from the forests of the state.

The country scenes are drawn from Heather's home in historic Windsor, Vermont, where she lives with her family. Her two children provide endless moments of delight and exploration serving as both her inspiration and her models. Her husband makes the frames and mills the wooden blanks that serve as Heather's canvas. The state's back roads and quiet beauty are the landscape of her life. Each burning captures a moment in Vermont, deeply known and gladly experienced.
