| Christopher Cleary began
exploring stone as a child. He discovered his talent for sand carving while
working for his father's stone business in Richmond, Vermont. Sand carving is one way to precisely etch stone with intricate detail. This is achieved by propelling a sand-like abrasive onto a surface using compressed air. Wherever the sand contacts the surface it erodes the stone, hence the term "sand carving". Chris' work is unique in that each design is hand drawn and manually cut into a single-use rubber overlay. The design is then sandblasted to a soft finish creating an etched look in the stone. Chris prefers this method because it allows him to freehand draw before carving while paying close attention to detail and depth as he carves. Hand drawing each design ensures an exceptional one-of-a-kind product. Chris delights in selecting each stone because he feels the stone is a work of art in and of itself! His work includes abstract and freestanding sculpture, birdbaths, fountains and garden stones. He also specializes in interior stone art such as wall hangings, lamps and slate ornaments. Chris makes the ornaments using reclaimed roofing slate; most are more than 100 years old. Chris is a member of the Vermont Crafts Council and serves on the board of directors of the Vermont Hand Crafters. His work has appeared in art shows and galleries throughout Vermont as well as in private collections on three continents. Born and raised in Vermont, Chris now lives in historic Jericho Center with his wife and son. He designs and carves full-time at his home based studio. Visits to his studio are always welcome. |
