| I have always been passionate about art and have been fortunate to study a variety of media at The High School of Music and Art in New York City, (1958) The University of Vermont, (1962) and in Post -Graduate Art Studies at New York University, and Westchester Community College in NY. I taught art in Westchester County, NY Public Schools for 22 years where it was always a challenge to inspire children to be creative with limited art supplies. A creative resourcefulness, undoubtedly inherited from my immigrant grandmother, led me to frequent factory dumpsters, flea markets and tag sales to collect " art supplies " for my classes and eventually my own artwork. I began experimenting and teaching myself to do " Picque Assiette " mosaic in 1998 with some of my mothers old dishes. " Picque Assiette " is the art/craft of creating mosaic designs with pieces of broken china on almost any surface. The vintage china, furniture, home accessories and other artifacts for my art have been gathered from the abundant antique centers, flea markets and tag sales in Vermont and beyond. Each piece I find has its own history. The mosaic design possibilities seem endless and often take on a life of their own. I find joy and often humor in seeing my designs grow from the combinations of colors, patterns, textures, shapes of the found parts. I like when I can combine painting and sculpting techniques with my mosaic designs. An added bonus! This craft satisfies my need to recycle and make art that is useful. There is always dialogue between the work in progress and myself. I usually do not know exactly what a piece will look like until it is done. I ' m sure I ' ve been influenced by my studies of the arts of different cultures, particularly Mexico and Spain and artists like Gaudi and Kaffe Fassett. Yet, each piece I create is personal, one of a kind, uninhibited and often whimsical. My mosaics are exhibited and sold through the Artists Guild in Manchester, VT, Vermont Artisan Designs in Brattleboro and occasional craft shows in VT. I designed a mosaic moose for the Bennington Moosefest in 2006 and a mosaic floral sculpture for the Wilmington Vermonster event in 2008. Both were auctioned to benefit local charities. Special orders are welcome. I love to collaborate and use a client’s own treasured pieces of old china to incorporate into a meaningful and unique work of art. |
