Sculpted Wool

Carved into the south-face of Butternut Mountain in Johnson, Vermont, is the home of the Wool Folk.  The  "folk "  go about their  lives under the watchful eye of Mount Mansfield peeking over the formidable shoulder of Whiteface Mountain.

The weather can be harsh on the mountain, but the wool of which the little folk are needle felted protects them from the elements.

They scurry along well worn paths, busy in  their various endeavors, but the natural hue of their clothing allows them to blend with the gray shadows of the boulders, and the mossy greens of the woods, and the fiery oranges of the Maples. It 's quiet they are too, in their silk-stockinged feet, or light woolen slippers.

It is great fun (especially in autumn) to catch one, and bring it indoors, as they offer the liveliest companionship to those within.  Once inside, Wool Folk feel right at home idly musing next to house ferns.

But don 't discount their mischievousness.  Often times if you 've lost your reading glasses, odds are, the Wool Folk have been at work, taking care of them in your absence.

And best of all, they are qualified messengers, passing along notes at the breakfast table clutched in little fists:  "Don 't forget to feed the chickens! "
