Pressed Flower Art

Ellie Roden, long time resident of Vermont, recently retired primary school teacher, and avid flower gardener, has been working with the pressed flower medium for many years.  She has always been intrigued with the beauty of flowers; pressing them is a way to preserve that beauty.  Ellie is a self-taught pressed flower artist, having mastered her craft through years of trial and error and careful observation.

Only real plant materials are used in Ellie’s designs.  Most flowers are from her gardens, woodlands, roadsides, and the gardens of generous neighbors.   The optimal time to pick flowers is at midday when it is sunny and dry.  New leaves and flowers retain their color better than ones that have been on the plant for days.  Rapid drying further diminishes fading so in recent years Ellie has opted to press and dry the plant material in a microwave as well as the traditional method.    Acid free paper, an acrylic sealer and UV protection conservation glass are used to ensure the vibrant colors of flowers are retained for many, many years.

Framed original pictures, cards and bookmarks are the usual results of Ellie’s designs.  She welcomes special orders.

Ellie’s work has been exhibited in shows and galleries in Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
